The ENITS Project proudly announces the international conference:BUDDHIST NARRATIVE IN ASIA AND BEYONDConvened in honour of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on her fifty-fifth birth anniversaryOrganized byThe Project of Empowering Network for International Thai Studies (ENITS), In co-operation withThe Faculty of Arts, The Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, 9-11 August 2010The Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel, Bangkok, ThailandBuddhism is accepted, not only as the heart of Thai culture, but also as a universal religion and as foundational to Asian and world civilization. Hence the study of Buddhism has an essential and significant role in the understanding of the thought systems that animate different cultures. Furthermore, it fosters profound and continuous learning necessary for personal and collective intellectual development. Buddhist narrative, comprising various elements of Buddhism—the Tipitaka, literary texts, and rituals, both traditional and contemporary—should be examined from a wide range of perspectives. A better understanding of Buddhist narrative will serve as an effective instrument in the intellectual development of the borderless global community. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is well-known for her enthusiasm for and interest in all aspects of Buddhist Studies. The year 2010 is an auspicious year in which the Thai people join in to celebrate her fifty-fifth birth anniversary. With this in mind, the Project of Empowering Network for International Thai Studies (ENITS), Institute of Thai Studies, Chulalongkorn University, with support from the Thailand Research Fund, in conjunction with Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Institute of Asian Studies, and Confucius Institute, Chulalongkorn University; and École française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) is organizing an international conference, “Buddhist Narrative in Asia and Beyond”. The conference will explore the significance and the many facets of Buddhist narrative in Asia and beyond, interpreting narrative in the broadest sense to include biography, mythology, arts and architecture, performance, and ritual. We hope to gain deeper understanding of the role of narrative in the localization and transmission of Buddhism in its social, historical, and cultural dimensions. The conference will celebrate the rich and intricate tapestry of narrative that has been woven across Asia and for over two millennia, an extraordinary heritage shared by Asian cultures.
